About This Workshop
Design websites and apps that are accessible for people with physical and situational disabilities.
Learn effective skills to create a more inclusive experience for a variety of disabilities. Gain exposure to evaluation tools and development techniques. Position yourself as a progressive and valued designer by learning how to design with accessibility in mind.
This workshop is available to your organization as a customized service. It can be presented at your site or via a streaming service. Day 1 consists of an interactive exploration of the key aspects of digital accessibility. Day 2 uses your own project content as examples while we work together to evaluate, design, and implement accessibility elements.

Workshop Elements
- Learn about current design philosophies for disabilities.
- Understand key aspects of important standards, like WCAG and Section 508.
- Create solutions for the blind, deaf, and mobility-challenged community.
- Work with evaluation tools, like Axe, ARC, WAVE and screen readers.
Prerequisites
- An understanding of basic principles of web/software design, prototyping, and audience analysis.
- Some exposure to the architecture of web sites and the underlying markup is helpful but not required.
- You have the option of using a laptop to work along with the activities.
About the Instructor
Joe lives in Seattle, working at Blink UX. As the Accessibility Director, he helps staff build their accessibility skills and guides accessibility projects for clients.
For over 25 years Joe has taught at the University of Washington in the areas of technical communication, design thinking, mobile app design, and accessible design.
Joe serves as a co-organizer of the Seattle Accessibility and the Inclusive Design Meetup group.
Joe is a Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies through IAAP.
